3 Dallas Roofing Maintenance Tips
Oct 11, 2019If you’re like many people, you don’t give your roof a lot of thought – that is, until there’s a problem. But a little bit of roofing maintenance can make a big difference, particularly if you live in Dallas, where we enjoy all four seasons with a few weather extremes.
Check out these three Dallas roofing maintenance tips to help extend your roof’s lifespan.
3 Dallas Roofing Maintenance Tips for Homeowners
Taking care of your roof helps it last longer – and fortunately, you don’t have to do a whole lot to maintain your home’s first line of defense against the elements. When it comes to maintaining a roof in Dallas, the most important things you can do are:
- Clean your gutters
- Trim trees that overhang your roof
- Check your attic at least two to three times each year
Let’s take a closer look at each of these.
1. Clean Your Gutters
Leaves and other debris can build up in gutters, which prevents them from draining properly. When water pools in your gutters, water can back up against the fascia boards – and when wood stays wet for too long, it starts to rot. Water can also make its way into your attic or, in severe cases, into your living areas. You should clean out your gutters at least twice a year and check them for debris after any major weather events.

2. Trim Trees That Overhang Your Roof
Fallen tree branches can do tremendous amounts of damage to your roof, but that’s not all you have to worry about. When trees hang over your roof, the lower branches can scratch away the protective coating on shingles. Even the shade a tree provides can create the perfect breeding ground for mold, algae, or even fungus, which can deteriorate your roof quickly.
3. Check Your Attic
Most of us rarely go into our attics, but it’s definitely worth checking out a few times a year. Look for wet spots on the rafters, check for damp patches on your insulation, and see if you can spot any mold or mildew growth. It’s especially important to check your attic after a storm because wind can force water beneath your shingles and into your attic.
